*Los Angeles – A huge spotlight always shines over Los Angeles and Hollywood year round.

This was brightly evidence during the month of June. June 7, 1979, former President Jimmy Carter officially recognized the cultural and financial contributions of Black music by declaring the month of June as Black Music Month.

In 2009, President Barack Obama defined June as African-American Music Appreciation Month (source: National Museum of African American Music).

May 3, 2013 – President Barack Obama issued a Proclamation declaring June, African-American Music Appreciation Month. “African-Americans have always had a hand in shaping the American Sound. From Gospel and Motown to bebop & blues, their story is bound up in the music they made–songs of hurt and hardship, yearning & hope and struggle for a better day.”

People travelled from all across the United States to Los Angeles for the annual BET Experience FanFest and BET Awards, June 28-30, 2013. BHCP LIVE! benefitted greatly from the influx of music lovers with a concert to celebrate African American Music Appreciation Month. This particular concert was a blast from the past and concluded the month with a bang at the outdoor Entertainment Promenade of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza on Sunday, June 30th.

DJ Paradise got the party started with some Old School tracks “Girl, You So Fine,” “Pay Back” by James Brown, “Tha Butt,” followed by “Because I Love You” a slow jam by Lenny Williams. He kept the crowd up dancing with “The Wobble” and “Mary Jane.” Tammy Mac, Program Host, KJLH Radio, 102.3FM served as Mistress of Ceremonies with her engaging, humorous banter.

The crowd served as additional back-up singers as they sang along with Cherrelle. Cherrelle beamed the crowd with her charm and hilarious stage banter as she opened her set with “You Look Good to Me,” This tune was followed by “Affair” with a brief chorus of “What Have You Done for Me Lately” complimented by some Fifty and Fabulous women dancing onstage. The show continued with “Fragile” (Handle with Care), “Crazy in Love” mixed in with a few bars of “Skin Tight.” She never slowed the tempo down as she performed “Didn’t Mean to Turn You On” which served as a perfect segue into “Everything I Miss at Home” while serenading vocalist/actor Keith Washington.

After a brief pause for the cause, vocalist Alexander O’Neal came onstage. He sang tunes straight from the heart about life, loving and living. His set was quite upbeat with many familiar tunes “All True Man,” “Sunshine,” “If You Were Here Tonight.” He worked the crowd into a frenzy on the tune “Fake” while roaming throughtout the venue site. He concluded his set with “Never Knew Love Like This.” Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle returned to the stage for the gand finale to duet on “Saturday Love.”

A dazzling display of Fireworks painted the skies and lit up Baldwin Hills and Leimert Park Village. Please visit www.baldwinhillscrenshawplaza.com for more information about BHCP LIVE!, movie times as well as list of stores and Mall hours.
